Home Learning Opportunities for 'Sun School' Wednesday 24th and Thursday 25th

We hope you all manage to stay cool and safe over the next two days. Here are some suggested activities you could do with your child to support their learning (these are also on Tapestry).

• scavenger hunt - Explorer’s love to find new places and new things! Here is your chance to draw what you can find! Children will come home with a sheet.
• explorer spellings - words to learn and discuss and spell IF children would like a challenge.
• work on capacity (great for water play)

Given the hot weather, it's a great opportunity for the children to work on their knowledge of capacity and volume by measuring water. You could collect some different containers from around the house and;

• Sort the containers into order of capacity (which containers can hold the most liquid)

• Practice filling the containers to full, nearly full, half full, nearly empty and empty

• Use measuring jugs or similar to practice measuring out a certain amount of water and notice how this looks different in different containers (if you don't have a jug, a plastic cup with a scale drawn on the side will work fine)

The children have a worksheet in their bags to complete if desired!

 

Remember your child has log in's for the following apps in their reading journal

Welcome to Year 1's page!

We are split into 2 classes - Pelicans with Mrs Lawrence (Teacher) and Yellow Wagtails with Mrs Shaw (Teacher). 

Miss Lloyd, Mrs Downs and Mrs Page will also be working across the classes at different times of the week. 

The children will also have PE with Mr Williams and music with Mrs Heap throughout the year.

Summer 2: Excellent Explorers 

 

Pivotal Domain - Topic

This term our focus area of the curriculum is Place and Time, specifically History. Our topic is called 'Excellent Explorers'. We will be learning about weather, seasons and climate. This will include work on the environment and sustainability. 

Please remember to check Tapestry regularly for photos, ideas and conversations starters about the children's learning. 

Communication, Language and Literacy  

         

To inspire our writing we will be using the different books during the half term including,Lost and Found and Zog. We will be working on building sentences including past tense verbs, subjects and including capital letters and full stops in our writing. We will also be continuing our understanding of phonics to support reading and writing. 

Maths

In maths we are starting the half term with work on weighing, then moving on to multiplication and division. We will continue to revise addition and subtraction alongside this.  

Physical Development

Children will be working on their athletics skills in PE lessons on a Wednesday with Mrs Paige.

Faith and Beliefs

Our Christian value for this half-term is 'Patience and Self-Control' and the children will explore the meaning of being faithful. In our F&B lessons this half-term, the children will be continuing their learning about how people view the world by looking at Humanism. 

Jigsaw PSHE - Changing Me

Children are introduced to life cycles e.g. that of a frog and identify the different stages. They compare this with a human life cycle and look at simple changes from baby to adult e.g. getting taller, learning to walk etc. They discuss how they have changed so far and that people grow up at different rates. As part of a school’s safeguarding duty, pupils are taught the correct words for private parts of the body (those kept private by underwear: vagina, anus, penis, testicles, vulva). They are also taught that nobody has the right to hurt these parts of the body. Change is discussed as a natural and normal part of getting older which can bring about happy and sad feelings. Children practise a range of skills to help manage their feelings and learn how to access help if they are worried about change, or if someone is hurting them.

Morning/afternoon drops offs and pick ups:

The school gates will be open at 08:45 each morning for drop-off and will open again from 15:15 for collection.

Children should enter and leave through the KS1 gate beside the BACS centre. Parents and carers are asked to drop children at the gate and pass any messages onto the member of staff who is on the gate. 

PE

The children will have PE on a Wednesday and should come to school wearing their PE kit. 

School equipment needed from home:

Children may continue to bring a WM bookbag to school (not rucksacks).  Please remember, children should not be bringing pencil cases, toys, cards etc to school.  Please ensure children have an outdoor coat and wellies in school at all times. Children will also need a fruit/veg snack for Monday-Thursday break time and one small treat (e.g. 2 finger kit kat or cup cake) for Friday break time. They will also need a named drink bottle for water each day.

Times Table Rock Stars & Numbots:

Your child will have come home with a Times Table Rock Stars/Numbots log in at the beginning of the year.  This can be found in their reading journals. I have included some information below to help you support your children on the game:

• The times tables set are 2s, 5s and 10s for all children (this is in line with what we cover in Year 1)
• The game will include both multiplication and division as it is important the children know both operations
• Please only play the 'Garage' games (Highlighted below), as this is the game controlled by the teacher, and will therefore only include 2s, 5s and 10s

READING (including Bug Club)

Please continue reading with your child, we cannot stress how important reading is for them. Minimum 3 reads per week!

In Year 1 reading becomes more of a comprehension. Here are some tips to help them become confident in comprehension work (very important for SATs in Year 2);

• Making predictions at the start of a new book/ chapter. Make sure they are able to explain their answer.
• Getting them to discuss what has just happened. Recall is very important. Remembering names, what has happened, where they are, what they are doing etc...
• General questioning of the vocabulary. The language will start to get trickier so discussing it with them will really help their understanding. Getting them to use a dictionary to look words up is really good too. One they are learning how to use a dictionary correctly (this is a requirement for the curriculum) and two they are learning to do their own research.
